Orlando general manager Otis Smith has said he won't match a deal worth more than $5 million per season for a backup to Dwight Howard, and he hasn't budged.

Smith told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday that he doesn't feel any more pressure to match the offer sheet Marcin Gortat will sign Wednesday with the Dallas Mavericks just because the Boston Celtics reportedly have an agreement with Rasheed Wallace.

"I have to round out the roster; that goes without saying," Smith said. "But I'm not so sure that you feel any more pressure to [re-sign Gortat]. I mean, he's still playing behind my best player. I'd like to have him back at a number that's reasonable."

Yes! I So this still means we have to wait until july 15 for Gortat to be able to sign with the mavs?

good addtion to the team...plus f we resign Bass then get "The Matrix", Mavs is dangerous!

a lot of people were worried when they thought the big man was being traded off in the draft, i think this proves that the main office always had bigger plans for the team in the first place, a great step!!!

YES! Good job, Mavs! Im glad we finally got him. I'm sure we'll see it official soon. But I'm wondering when are we going to hear Bass being offered a contract? I hope we can re-sign him :)

Best Backup Center in the League and hopefully we can resign bass.

i thought that with this deal bass was maybe going to orlando??
i also read that he will wait the full 7 days til deciding.. so it won't be til the 15th.

yeah son!! Wonder what happens to dampier now. We gotta keep Hollins on the roster. He has too much potential to take off. We got depth at every position. What else could we possibly use damp to trade for?? We still need to do more to be contenders. My guess is since we signed Quinton Ross Mavs have plans to trade Jet and JJ barrea to get Rick Hamilton from the pistons. Reason I say JJ is because Toronto wants us to take Marcus Banks (PG) along with marion for Jerry stackhouse in order to clear up cap space. Do we really need two potential backup point guards?

I'm gonna make my predictions for the night: Mavs' perimeter defenders do a good job on Ariza, Battier, Budinger. Scola & Brooks put up good numbers but Mavs still won by 10+
